Throughout we consider operators on a reflexive Banach space __X__. We consider certain algebraic properties of __F__(__X__), __K__(__X__) and __B__(__X__) with the general aim of examining their dependence on the possession by __X__ of the approximation property. __B__(__X__) (resp. __K__(__X__)) denotes the algebra of all bounded (resp. compact) operators on __X__ and __F__(__X__) denotes the closure in __B__(__X__) of its finite rank operators. The two questions we consider are: (1) Is __K__(__X__) equal to the set of all operators in __B__(__X__) whose right and left multiplication operators on __F__(__X__) (or on __B__(__X__)) are weakly compact? (2) Is __F__(__X__) a dual algebra?
