Hiatus hernia can be cured by surgery, and operation should not be withheld if symptoms persist despite medical treatment. In 1956 one of us (K.N.M.) wrote: In conclusion I wish to say that I feel that the surgery of hiatus hernia has now advanced to a very satisfactory stage. Mortality and morbidity are extremely low and the recurrence rate is small and will become smaller with increasing experience. Many of these patients have been miserable for years with chronic dyspepsia, dysphagia or pain. Others have had their lives endangered by massive hsemorrhage, chronic aneemla or oesophageal obstruction.
