The Minamata Bay mercury poisoning disaster in Japan was caused by dumping of mercury compounds by the Chisso Corporation from 1932 to 1968. Mercury bioaccumulated in fish and shellfish eaten by locals, poisoning over 3,000 victims who suffered neurological symptoms and deformities. Despite knowing the health risks, Chisso did nothing to stop the dumping until forced to in 1968. The contaminated bay sediments were dredged from 1977 to 1990 in a costly cleanup effort.
