## Abstract When Aristotle presents his views about causes, the context is invariably epistemological, and he thinks his views make natural science possible in a way that his predecessors’ views do not. This raises a question: how do we grasp causes, and how do we grasp them in a way that yields scientific understanding? The importance of this question is often overlooked; here it is clarified, and a range of answers are surveyed. Aristotle does not attack the question directly, but he does make important claims about knowledge in relation to causes. These passages indicate that we should approach the question by examining our cognitive goals, our cognitive starting points, and the cognitive capacities by which we are supposed to be able to make the transition between them.
