What is Conquer that cube, by Czes Kosniowski. Pp 32. £1·35. 1981. ISBN 0-251-28814-2 (Cambridge University Press) about?

Basic mathematics for biochemistry, by Athel Cornish-Bowden. Pp 137. £3-95. 1981. ISBN 0-412-23010-0 (Chapman and Hall) The physical chemistry essential for understanding this paperback includes acid-base and redox equilibria treated thermodynamically; first order, catalytic and steady state kinetics, and some molecular, but not structural, chemistry. A biochemist so equipped must already have studied intensively these mathematics, namely: 1, The language of mathematics (18 pp); 2, Exponents and logarithms (18); 3, Differential calculus (20); 4, Integral calculus (13); 5, Solving equations (18); and 6, Partial differentiation (7). The author says he writes for 'non-mathematically minded biochemists' who need his short revision (of some O-level and some A-level mathematics). Short it is, for most of the book is quantitative biochemistry. Its 215 mm by 133 mm pages are well printed and justified, are not stitched and do not open flat. There is a good index, twenty excellent Eulerian graphs and four tables of information, but no references, cross references, or bibliography. Numerical methods, including curve sketching and approximation are well done. Altogether, at the ends of its si
