What is Tanabata about?

Fas-ang, a woman from Bontoc, comes to work on the roads being built in Baguio but has no place to stay. She meets Tanabata, a Japanese gardener, who offers her and another woman work in his garden in exchange for lodging. Fas-ang accepts and stays with Tanabata, helping in the garden and learning domestic chores. Tanabata grows fond of Fas-ang and proposes marriage to her, hoping she will agree to become his wife.
