What is Light‐dependent photosynthetic characteristics indicated by chlorophyll fluorescence in five mangrove species native to Pohnpei Island, Micronesia about?

To investigate the adaptive capacity to strong light among mangrove species, we examined light‐dependent properties of photosynthesis in relation to photoinhibition using chlorophyll fluorescence for sun‐leaves of five mangrove tree species; __Sonneratia alba__, __Rhizophora stylosa__, __Rhizophora apiculata__, __Bruguiera gymnorrhiza__ and __Xylocarpus granatum__. These species were classified into three groups; pioneer —__S. alba__ and __R. stylosa__, intermediate —__R. apiculata__ and __B. gymnorrhiza__ and climax species —__X. granatum__. A further distinction can be made between the two intermediate species, the less shade‐tolerant __R. apiculata__ and the shade‐tolerant __B. gymnorrhiza__. There was a clear association between successional status and light‐saturated electron transport rate (ETR) where ETR was higher in __S. alba__ and __R. stylosa__ > __R. apiculata__ and __B. gymnorrhiza__ > __X. granatum__. Based on its lower initial slope of light‐dependent ETR and lower ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (F~v~/F~m~) after a dark‐adaptation, __X. granatum__ appeared to suffer greater photoinhibition than other species. The response of q~P~, which represents PSII ope
