What is The Thermodynamic Treatment of the Sorption of Alkylpyridinium Bromides in Acetate Fibers about?

The sorption isotherms of alkylpyridinium bromides, C8, C10, Ct2, and C~4 single homolog alkyl chain lengths, in acetate fibers were determined at various temperatures in the presence of 80 mmole NaBr. The equilibrium sorption data were analyzed on the basis of a general theoretical model and the thermodynamic parameters for the sorption process of alkylpyridinium bromides in acetate fibers were obtained. The affinity increased regularly with alkyl chain length and the affinity increments per -CH2-CH2-group were about 4.5 k J/mole. With C8, Cl0, and C~2 the heats of sorption were always negative. However, the contribution of the favorable entropy effect to the affinity increments became greater with increase of the alkyl chain length of the homolog. With C~4 the heat of sorption varied from negative heats of-5 3.0 kJ/mole at 323 K through zero heats at 300 K to positive heats of + 17.9 kJ/mole at 293 K. The role of hydrophobic interactions in the sorption process is discussed.
