Pinta is a chronic skin disease caused by the spirochete Treponema carateum. It is characterized by skin lesions that progress from papules to pigmented plaques over time. While pinta only affects the skin, lesions can cause disfiguring changes. It is most common in remote rural areas of Central and South America.
