What is Shakespeare about?
In 1500s Venice, tensions were high between Christians and Jews. Antonio, a merchant, needs money for his friend Bassanio to court Portia but has none, so they visit the moneylender Shylock, who is Jewish. Due to past discrimination, Shylock agrees to lend the money at no interest but with the condition that if Antonio defaults, Shylock can take a pound of his flesh. This sets up the conflict that Shakespeare explores around prejudice and its consequences in his famous play, The Merchant of Venice.
