In the hundreds of books written about rock and roll, there are only occasional references to humor in the songs. But, according to Iain Ellis, humor has been essential to rock and roll from its birth in the mid-1950s to the present. At the beginning, rock and roll was sold to adolescents, and emphasized their rebellion against their parents. That made humorous mockery a natural part of the lyrics. The music also expressed primal emotions repressed by the adult establishment. In a section titled "Id-iotic Outbursts", Ellis cites Freud's theory of jokes as releasing repressed emotions, especially drives for sex and violence, and shows how rock humor did that. Although Alan Freed is often credited with introducing the term "rock and roll" in 1951, it was already in use in black America by 1948. At the time, rhythm and blues was the dominant style in the African American recording industry.
