The history of Trade Union movement in Bangladesh dates back to middle of the 19th century when modern industry started to develop in the Indian sub-continent. British rulers constructed railways, developed tea, jute, indigo plantations and imposed 70 to 80 per cent tax on silk goods of India. The first textile mills started operation in and around capital city Dhaka in 1920 to 35. During 1860-1880 the first tea gardens were commissioned.
