Ferdinand Magellan led a Spanish expedition of five ships and 237 men in 1519 to find a western passage to the Spice Islands. After navigating the treacherous Strait of Magellan, losing two ships to mutiny, and crossing the vast Pacific Ocean, the expedition reached the Philippines in 1521 where Magellan established relations with local leaders and celebrated the first Catholic mass.
