William Brass has been described as one of the most distinguished demographers since Thomas Malthus. The papers collected in this volume reflect his influence in four different fields of demographic science. Two sections deal with recent methodological innovations in research areas which he pioneered: indirect estimation, dealing with the problems of fertility and mortality estimation in populations without vital registration systems; bio-demography, dealing with the relationship between physiological measures and demographic events.
