Brisbane ## 73 IT is a special privilege for one of. her former students to be invited to give the 1969 Lecture, the fourth in the series, in memory of Dr Helen Mayo, and I am grateful to the Committee of the Mothers and Babies' Health Association for allowing me this particular pleasure. Dr Mary Burnell, the Senior Vice-President, and Dr John Covernton, who until recently was the Medical Director of the Association, were final-year students with me in 1931. It was in that year we first encountered Helen Mayo, then aged 52 years and at her best. She gave a course of lectures to sixth-year students on "Medical Diseases of Children" and subsequently taught us at the bedside in the Adelaide Children's Hospital. The lectures were good -crisp, pungent and memorable, though emphasizing many of the conditions that now occupy so little of our time, such as congenital syphilis, tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping-cough and poliomyelitis. It is difficult to imagine prediatrics in the days before antibioticsthe first sulphonamides were just being talked about in 1931 -before immunization, before the Rh factor, when the label "congenital heart disease" led to no closer diagnosis and no treatmen
