About this document

Mantle Convection and Plate Movement by Rosel Laine Delos Santos is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Mantle convection causes the movement of tectonic plates by dragging plates horizontally as convection currents move upward and downward in the mantle. Where convection currents move up, plates move apart and new lithosphere is created, and where plates converge one is subducted under the other. Plates also move through ridge push from new crust forming at ocean ridges and slab pull as dense oceanic plates sink into the mantle due to their own weight during subduction.
