Rizal spent his early childhood in Calamba, where he received his early education from his mother and other tutors. At age 9, he was sent to study in Biñan but was unhappy and homesick. During this time, his aunt Teodora Alonso was falsely accused and imprisoned, which caused Rizal to lose faith in people. The Cavite Mutiny of 1872, in which three Filipino priests were executed, had a strong influence on the 11-year-old Rizal and sowed seeds of nationalism.
