It was formed in 1974 when seven major international banks met to discuss limitations of using Telex. Currently almost 8,000 financial institutions in over 200 countries use SWIFT to transmit various payment and transaction messages. SWIFT provides standardized messaging formats and works to ensure security, reliability and low transmission costs for international financial transfers.
