What is Fungal Cryptochrome DNA Repair Evolution about?

This study examines cryptochrome (CryA) from the fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus. The researchers found that CryA expression is induced by blue light in a manner dependent on the Mad complex transcription factor. CryA was able to bind flavin and methenyltetrahydrofolate cofactors, complement an E. coli photolyase mutant, and repair cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer lesions in both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA in vitro. This suggests that CryA functions as a photolyase and that cryptochromes in mucorom
