About this document
Britten by Matthew Lynch is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Benjamin Britten was born in 1913 in England and began composing at age 13. He wrote over 800 early works before publishing. The Simple Symphony is based on fragments of these early compositions from his childhood and student years. The four movements juxtapose themes from his early piano pieces and songs, including a restless theme from a 1926 suite and a sweet lyrical theme from a 1923 song. Though a modest work, the Simple Symphony gained Britten popularity when he wrote it in 1934 at age 20.
