Exxon Mobil is investing $600 million into Synthetic Genomics to develop biofuels from algae. Craig Venter, who previously sequenced the human genome, founded Synthetic Genomics and believes algae can be engineered to secrete hydrocarbons directly into the culture medium where they are grown. This "biomanufacturing" process avoids having to harvest and break open the algae cells. With further genetic modifications, the algae could produce pure hydrocarbons that could be directly added into the oil refining
