This document proposes a new modeling approach for simulating the seismic behavior of monumental masonry buildings using a macro-element discretization method. The macro-element concept allows the nonlinear behavior of a masonry structure to be captured with greatly reduced computational cost compared to traditional finite element modeling. The macro-elements are capable of reproducing the nonlinear degradation of masonry and can simulate both in-plane and out-of-plane failure mechanisms of the structure. T
