The Houma people are a Native American tribe originally from Louisiana near the Red River. They spoke a Muskogean language related to Choctaw but it went extinct in the 19th century. Today the Houma number around 17,000 and live in southern Louisiana parishes, speaking French and English. The United Houma Nation has been recognized as a tribe by Louisiana since 1972 but not yet by the federal government.
