A wideband cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) using inserted metallic ring is presented. Before giving the specific designs, an analysis about .E-field distribution of TM 02o mode is carried out and an engineering formula for calculating the resonance frequency of TM 02o mode in a cylindrical dielectric resonator (DR) is proposed. The errors between the results obtained by the proposed engineering formula and that of the dielectric waveguide model (DWM) method are less than 2%. Based on the analysis of E-field distribution, the wideband DRA is proposed, which introduces an inserted metallic ring in the cylindrical DR to adjust the resonance frequency of TM 02, mode. By the use of the metallic ring, the resonance frequencies of TM 01o and TM 02o modes are closely located and can support a wide operating band of 21.2%.
