Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) is a mining method that uses explosive charges placed in large diameter holes drilled from the top of the orebody to blast the ore in horizontal slices. The explosive charges are spherical to break the rock in a crater shape. As each level is blasted, the broken ore falls down into the level below.
