What is Advances in Biodegradation and Bioremediation of Arsenic Contamination in the Environment about?

## Chapter outline Arsenic (As) is an omnipresent metalloid geogenically present in mineral form and accompanied with various transition metals. It largely exists as arsenates (60%), oxides (10%), arsenides, arsenites, silicates, and elemental arsenic (10%), and the remaining 20% comprising sulfides and sulfosalts (Duarte et al., 2009;Sahoo and Kim, 2013). Arsenic can mobilize in the environment through both natural (geogenic) and anthropogenic (unsewered sanitation) sources. Rock weathering, volcanic eruption, marine aerosols, and thermal waters are natural processes that trigger arsenic release in the environment, whereas agricultural and industrial activities, coal and oil extraction procedures, the use of pesticides, and the mining of metal ores are anthropogenic activities that mobilize arsenic in the environment CHAPTER 107 Biological Approaches to Controlling Pollutants.
