Virgil guides Dante through the fifth circle of Hell, where they encounter the Wrathful crouched on the bank of the Styx river, striking at each other in anger. They also see invisible souls submerged in the mud, who are the Sullen. They cross the Styx on a boat with Phlegyas and see Filippo Argenti being torn apart by other souls.
