Static electricity occurs when electrons build up on an object, giving it a charge. Opposite charges attract, while like charges repel. When a build up of electrons is discharged, it can flow quickly and cause phenomena like lightning or static cling on clothes in the dryer. Grounding provides a path for excess electrons to safely reach the earth or ground.
