What is PCM and ADPCM Overview about?

PCM and its extensions allow efficient digital transmission of voice signals. Standard PCM with μ-law companding was used in early digital telephone networks. Later improvements include differential PCM (DPCM) which transmits signal differences, adaptive DPCM (ADPCM) which adjusts quantization levels, and delta-sigma modulation which can represent signals with 1 bit by oversampling.
