WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) genes control the size of lateral root primordia in rice and determine the type of lateral roots formed. Two WOX genes, QHB/OsWOX5 and OsWOX10, have opposing roles in regulating lateral root primordium size. QHB/OsWOX5 represses the increase in lateral root diameter by repressing OsWOX10.
