The draco was a military standard originally used by the cavalry of Central Asian steppe peoples like the Sarmatians and Alans. It consisted of a hollow metal dragon head attached to a long cloth tail or sleeve that would flutter dramatically in the wind. The Romans adopted the draco from these groups and it was used primarily by cavalry units at first for games and parades before being taken up more widely by infantry in the 3rd century AD.
