Lao, the official language of Laos, is spoken by approximately three million persons in that country and by some ten million more in Thailand. Reading Lao: A Programmed Introduction is the first of a two-volume course designed to teach students to read newspaper articles, short stories, technical descriptions of moderate difficulty, literary narratives, political speeches and other materials of similar difficulty. The general plan for the work was made by Warren G. Yates, Chairman of the Foreign Service Institute Department of East Asian Languages, and Souksomboun Sayasithsena, Lao language instructor at FSI. Mr. Sayasithsena provided the Lao language material and did the scribal work. Dr. Yates supplied English glosses and explanations of grammar. Mrs. Siamphorn Douangpanya typed a large part of the text, including both English and Lao portions. Tape recordings, which are an integral part of this course of study, were made in the FSI studio under the technical direction of Jose M. Ramirez.
