When it was thought that the situation could not possibly get worse, the year 2018 brought renewed repression against labor activists and their supporters in China. In such a grim context, two recent books offer some refreshing views regarding the recent past and potential future of the Chinese labor movement. China on Strike includes firsthand accounts of 15 different labor struggles that took place between 2003 and 2011 in the Pearl River Delta region. The book is structured in three sections: the first focuses on struggles against factory closures and includes two chapters; the second deals with struggles against wage cuts and comprises 10 chapters, some offering testimonies of ordinary strike participants and some revolving around strike leaders; and the third presents three accounts of strikes for wage increases.
