What is Lorenz SZ 40/42 Cipher Machine Overview about?
The Lorenz SZ 40 and SZ 42 were German cipher machines used during World War II for encrypted teleprinter communications. The machine had 12 wheels containing 501 pins each that generated a stream of pseudorandom numbers to encrypt messages. British cryptographers at Bletchley Park were able to deduce how the machine operated and built computers like Colossus to decrypt the "Tunny" traffic from Lorenz machines, allowing them to read much of this high-level German communications.
