Çréla Prabhupäda was born in 1896 in Calcutta, India and named Abhay Caran De by his devotee parents. As a child, he organized Ratha-yäträ festivals. He received a college education and married but continued spiritual studies. In 1922, he met his guru Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvati who instructed him to preach Krsna consciousness worldwide.
