The abbey of Marchiennes, one of the four Benedictine monasteries installed on the banks of the Scarpe, on the borders of Flanders and Hainaut, was originally a family monastery with a double community of men and women, founded around 630/640 by Saint Amand and entrusted to Rictrude, widow of the Frankish aristocrat Adalbald. From 1024/25, after the expulsion of the nuns, Marchiennes emerged from obscurity. Accounts of its growth and evolution have been reconstructed thanks to substantial and varied written production (narrative and hagiographical accounts, obituary, customary, library, charters and cartularies). The present edition of 124 charters (72% of originals), four appendices, and the use of other sources serve as support for an introduction to this historical but dynamic community. This dynamism links this institution to that of the other neighboring Benedictine monasteries, the all-powerful Anchin, the venerable Saint-Amand and, to a lesser extent, Hasnon. This work illustrates the abbey of Marchiennes as a prominent player in the monastic stronghold of the Scarpe valley, a veritable boulevard of the monks.
