What is Peking Opera: History and Characteristics about?

Peking Opera originated in Beijing in the late 18th century and was popularized by four drama troupes from Anhui province who performed for the Qianlong Emperor. It has two categories - wen focuses on relationships and wu focuses on war. Performances feature distinctive music and instrumentation to accompany singing and combat. Actors take on roles like sheng, dan, jing, and chou that require specialized makeup, movement, and skills developed from an early age.
