## Tr anslator's Note So eager was Mallarme to avoid anything hackneyed and trite, so important did he consider the rejuvenation of language, that even his letters, particularly in his later years, were written in a prose style whose vocabulary and syntax are determinedly idiosyncratic. In trans lating them I have attempted to reproduce the flavor of the original rather than smooth out or gloss over their deliberate strangeness. Titles of works to which Mallarme refers have been translated only when this helps to explain his comments on them, since he occasion ally makes punning allusions to such titles. This translation is profoundly indebted to the scholarship and friendship of Lloyd Austin, editor of the eleven volumes of Mallarme's correspondence, of which the following letters provide a mere sample.
