What is Abstracts of the first meeting of the metastasis research society Trieste, Italy, 6–8 April 1986 about?

Metastases are the essence of malignancy and it is therefore impossible to eradicate cancer without effective means of preventing or treating metastases. This problem has been somewhat neglected but it can now be tackled using several recently developed experimental models to study cancer disseminaiton and metastasis in organs such as lung, liver and bones. These models have already indicated a variety of possible targets for selective antimetastatic chemotherapy especially since chemicals accumulate preferentially in small metastases compared with large primary tumors because of the better blood flow in the former. Among several promising leads, attention will be paid to the role of macrophages, the importance of angiogenesis, procoagulant activity, growth factors and prostaglandins. However it is already clear that no single general approach is likely to prove sufficient since each type of cancer has its own peculiarities. Equally important in cancer chemotherapy is a knowledge of the factors which increase dissemination and metastasis; as an example multifactorial effects of corticosteroids on primary and metastatic tumors will be discussed.
