What is Comparative biochemistry of flavonoids—V. : Luteolin 5-glucoside and its occurrence in the umbelliferae about?

Abshct-A substance thought to be the S+lucoside of luteolin, which was isolated from petals of Dahk vurtiilis in 1953 and which agreed in its properties with a similar constituent in seed of Gulegu ofi&& the first known source, is now shown to be free luteolin. The genuine 5-8hxoside has now been discovered in leaves of Torib arvensis, T. noabsa and Chaetosciadurn trichospermum and rsexamination of Galega wed has confirmed that it contains the 5-glueoside as well as the free aglycone. Luteolin S-&coside has a very distinctive blue fluonxence in U.V. light, has chant&r tstic spectral properties and is unusually acid-labile. A similarly unstable compound in the petals of-album appears to be the analo8ous 5-$lucoside of quexetin. The natural diitribution of ilavone 5-glucosides and their value as taxonomic markers are discussed.
