The paper presents a novel concept of using PV solar farm inverters as STATCOMs (PV-STATCOMs) to improve stable power transfer limits of interconnected transmission systems. Transient stability studies on a power system model show that a PV-STATCOM can substantially increase stable transmission limits at night and during the day when generating real power. Combining multiple solar farms or solar and wind farms with STATCOM controls can further increase power transfer limits.
