THE purpose of this highly absorbing chapter in the history of the socialist movement is to show how the Hungarian Social Democratic party responded to the problems inherent in its growth from a small artisans' group in 1890 to a mass party ten years later. The author presents both challenge and response as intimately bound with the peculiar conditions of Hungary. The working-class leaders of the party completely espoused the German, or orthodox Marxist, program for achieving socialism through the gradual expansion of democratic institutions by "majority vote" in a country where all political life was in the hands of the nobility. In an attempt to build a mass movement for universal suffrage and legal working-class institutions, with a semiliterate rank and file and no influence in the countryside, the leadership turned to the radical Hungarian intelligentsia. Intellectuals such as Oszkár Jászi, most of whom were of bourgeois origin, were already disillusioned with the liberal gentry who had long abandoned any serious aims of social regeneration in Hungary for nationalist disputation with the Habsburg monarchy.
