## Abstract Aichinger’s novel The greater hope was translated into Italian twice, the first time in 1963 and in a new version in 1999. The result, especially in the case of the most recent translation, is disappointing. It is absolutely insufficient, full of inaccuracies as well as mistakes and omissions, indeed to the extent that an Italian reader has difficulty gaining an adequate understanding of the original. Rather than compiling a boring list made out of all the pertinent criticism that could be made, these versions are used here as a basis for a discussion of a variety of typical translation issues such as the rendition of specific stylistic phenomena like alienation or playing with the reader’s expectations, difficulty in translating fact and elements uniquely belonging to a foreign culture, puns, etc.
