John McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, and soldier born in 1872. He is best known for writing the famous World War I poem "In Flanders Fields". McCrae served as a physician in World War I and was inspired to write the poem after the death of his friend in 1915. The poem became enormously popular and helped rally support for the war. McCrae continued serving as a physician until his death from pneumonia in 1918, just days after being appointed as a consulting physician to the British army.
