Cellular respiration involves two main stages - glycolysis and the Krebs cycle. Glycolysis breaks down glucose into pyruvic acid, producing 2 ATP per glucose molecule. The Krebs cycle further breaks down pyruvic acid, producing 2 more ATP per cycle. Electrons from NADH and FADH2 are passed through the electron transport chain, producing between 2-3 ATP per electron pair. Aerobic respiration generates around 36-38 ATP from each glucose molecule used.
