The Deepwater Horizon oil rig sank in April 2010, triggering a major oil spill response. Efforts to activate the blowout preventer to seal the well using remote operated vehicles were unsuccessful. By May 2010, over 2,000 volunteers were trained to assist and BP provided $25 million grants to Gulf states for contingency plans.
