What is The Variable Sun about?

In Sunshine , a film set 50 years into the future, written by Alex Garland and released in AD 2007, a team of astronauts is sent to re-ignite the dying sun. The plot is a little at odds with the standard model, which, as we saw, predicts that the Sun will soldier on for atleast another 4 Gyr. But it makes by implication two telling points omitted from many astrophysics textbooks: that our knowledge of the past 4.6 Gyr of solar history is very incomplete and mostly circumstantial, and that (as we saw) the conventional view of the Sun's future is grounded in a model which is still being refined.Although portions of Solar System history can be pieced together from meteorites, interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) and the battered rock record of the inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, the history of the Sun itself is confined to the four centuries of telescopic observation or, at best, the two millennia during which Chinese, Korean and European astronomers have kept a tally of its sunspots. There is some information on solar flares and cosmic rays over the last 1 Gyr to be recovered from lunar surface deposits, and on solar wind activity over the last 8,000 years to be inferred
