What is Painting, Beauty, and the Sacred about?

Abstract This book has argued that all painting has at least a structural analogy to the icon in that it seeks to make present the essential nature of its subject matter. But the discussion in Chapters Eight and Nine has supported a stronger claim, that all painting is in a sense religious in that it is disclosive of a sacred order. This chapter then considers several unresolved questions. Firstly, if the beautiful is (broadly speaking) identified with the sacred, and if nature as a whole is a sacred order, then does this imply that everything is beautiful? Secondly, given the emotional impact on some of, for example, sentimental art, is it only good art that can ‘make present’? Thirdly, if all painting is in a sense religious, what is the relation between explicitly religious painting (such as the icon) and what we might call implicitly religious painting?
