What is A Jewish, a Catholic and a Neo-Marxist Critique of Kierkegaard’s Philosophy of Religion about?

Kierkegaards philosophy of religion constituted a vital source of inspiration for a broad range of twentieth-century philosophers and theologians. Kierkegaard was often seen as a radical defensor fidei and a critic of Christianitys unhappy marriage with fashionable philosophical and societal trends. However, Kierkegaards philosophy of religion was in the twentieth century also subject to substantial criticism. The present study examines three influential critiques formulated by thinkers representing three different world-views and traditions of thought. In spite of their different backgrounds, Bubers, Guardinis and Adornos criticisms of Kierkegaards philosophy of religion show some striking similarities. Although each of these critiques approaches Kierkegaards philosophical project from its own perspective, they share the important concern that Kierkegaards philosophy of religion is ultimately incompatible with some of the most fundamental doctrines of Christianity. This criticism is indubitably among the most serious addressed to Kierkegaards philosophy of religion in the twentieth century. I would like to thank Rebecca Blocksome for her thorough proofreading of this article. betw
