What is Tennyson about?

Ulysses laments being an idle king ruling over a savage people. He has a restless spirit and has seen much in his travels, experiencing both joy and suffering. He calls his son Telemachus his heir, hoping he will wisely rule their people. Ulysses then addresses his crew, saying that though they are old their spirit remains. He proposes setting sail once more to seek adventure beyond the sunset, not content to sit and rust, but to continue striving and exploring until his death.
